Geography and History - Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings

Saxons Vs. Vikings: Historical Facts - Viking Style

This term we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. Our main learning question is: How did England change during the settlement of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings?

We will be using a timeline to sequence key events in history, describing and explaining the struggle between the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings and we will be learning about what life was like for the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings when they settled in Britian.

Our Class Read:

Beowulf

This term we are reading Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo

In fifth-century Denmark, a murderous monster stalks the night, and only the great prince of the Geats has the strength and courage to defeat him. Beowulf's terrifying quest to destroy Grendel, the foul fiend, a hideous sea-hag and a monstrous fire-dragon is the oldest surviving epic in British literature.

Science - Properties of materials

60 Science -properties of materials ideas | properties of materials, science, science activities

In science this term, children will learn how to:

  • compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets
  • know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution
  • use knowledge of solids, liquids and gases to decide how mixtures might be separated, including through filtering, sieving and evaporating
  • give reasons, based on evidence from comparative and fair tests, for the particular uses of everyday materials, including metals, wood and plastic
  • demonstrate that dissolving, mixing and changes of state are reversible changes
  • explain that some changes result in the formation of new materials, and that this kind of change is not usually reversible, including changes associated with burning and the action of acid on bicarbonate of soda

Information for Parents

We have PE every Monday and Wednesday. Please can you ensure your child comes to school wearing the correct kit (white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps/trainers).

Homework

Spellings and times tables practise activities will be sent home every Friday. Please encourage your child to practise these at home as both are cruical in your child's learning.

We do our spelling test every Friday. Please practise the spelling words which are sent home with your child. There are prizes for childrwen who recieve a high score!

In Year 6, we recommend children read every night. This is extremely important as it allows children to develop their minds and imagination, have a stronger understanding of the world, become a better learner and listener and will ultimately allow them to become successful in Year 6 and in their future life.

Class Dojo

At Abingdon Primary School we use a commucation app called Class Dojo.  We use this to engage parents by sharing photos and videos of exciting moments in the classroom. It is also an effective way for teachers and parents to communicate.

Times Table Rock Stars

In Year 6 it is crucial that children know their times tables up to the 12x table.

At Abingdon, we use Times Tables Rock Stars. This is an exciting and engaging way for children to practise, and become fluent in, their times tables. Children are encouraged to play at home to improve their speed and scores.

They can also earn points and certificates through Times Table Rock Stars, so please encourage your child to play at home.

Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings

Below is a list of spellings all Year 6 children should read and write by the end of the year. These words are sent home as part of their spellings each week. Please help support your child's learning by practising these at home.
