Computing

At Abingdon Primary School, we view Computing as a fundamental component of the creative curriculum. It is a subject that not only stands alone, but is also an integral part of all learning. Computing is now a significant part of our daily lives and we believe that children should be at the forefront of new technology, with a drive for wanting to learn more about our fast-changing world.

We aim to provide our children with a wide range of skills which enables them to be computational thinkers and participate effectively in the digital world. Abingdon’s Computing curriculum provides children with pertinent learning opportunities, which ensures they are well-equipped with skills to help them succeed and flourish in today’s modern life.

At Abingdon, we strive to provide a high-quality Computing curriculum which is broken down into 3 key areas:

  • Digital Literacy
  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology

Objectives within each of these main strands supports the development of each child’s learning and gives them a solid ground for future learning and beyond. Throughout these lessons, children have opportunities to use a range of technology including laptops, iPads, Microbits, cameras, voice recording equipment and programmable toys. Teachers at Abingdon Primary ensure that exciting cross-curricular links are weaved throughout other areas of the curriculum, to motivate children and enable them to fully embed the skills they have been taught.

We consider e-safety to be of upmost importance. We strive to ensure that children have a solid awareness on how to be safe both online and offline. It is paramount to us that our children know how to act ‘SMART’ online and have an awareness of their digital footprint. Our three core values: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience are embedded throughout our e-safety lessons and it is crucial to us that children are able to communicate their ideas and thoughts in a safe, secure environment.

Purple Mash!

At Abingdon Primary, we love using Purple Mash!

Purple Mash is a creative, educational website for children. It is is a cross-curricular resource covering all subjects from computing to art, from science to maths and everything in between! Our pupils can also access Purple Mash from home on a laptop, desktop or a tablet. All pupils have their own username and password. These should remain confidential and allow you and your child unique access. Please contact your class teacher if you need your child's login details.

Purple Mash is a safe environment that does not require any downloading or allow interaction with people online and children cannot make any financial transactions. We use Purple Mash in school to support the curriculum and we encourage the children to use this program to support their learning at home – Purple Mash is a great resource for this!
