Phonics
At Abingdon Primary School, we teach Phonics using the scheme: Read, Write, Inc (RWI). Trained staff members deliver the RWI Scheme consistently, enabling the children to be taught how to: recognise Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds, blend taught sounds accurately, decode simple words containing taught graphemes, and read specifically designed books that are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of Phonics and Common Exception Words.
At Abingdon Primary School, our children begin their Phonics and Reading journey in Reception (EYFS) and will continue to access the scheme throughout KS1. RWI Phonics Lessons are taught daily, and each lesson includes: a daily Speed Sound Lesson, spelling practice and a guided read. The skills taught in RWI Phonics Lessons, are then utilised and practised within their reading and writing lessons.
All children accessing the RWI Scheme, are assessed at the end of every half term, and the children are placed into 'Progress Groups', to ensure each child is working at their 'challenge level'. Each child then takes home a RWI Reading Book that matched the sounds they are learning and the 'Progress Group' they are working within. Children continue to access the RWI until they become a confident and fluent reader, and have been assessed as completing the RWI Phonics Scheme. This typically takes place in Year 2, but it is important to note, that some children may need to continue to access Phonics and the RWI Scheme in KS2. Once the children have been identified as completeing the RWI Scheme, they will access Reading Lessons (Reading Gems).
Below is a copy of the speed sounds that the children will learn. This is displayed during lessons for the children to see.
